Eclectic Interior Design Goes Main Stream

The New Traditional: Today’s conventional home interior is moving away from the buy-as-a-set theme to a much more blended eclecticism incorporating many styles and periods into a heterogeneous mix. What was once considered avant-garde design is now becoming main stream. It’s no longer considered a fashion faux-pa, for example, to introduce older warn pieces with new or contemporary designs into what was previously considered a stately home interior. The mixing of differing cultural influences as in Asian with Queen Anne, for example, is acceptable. The rules of interior design have been stretched so much that it’s now entered a new era that transcends the previous norms. Of course, along with all these changes in acceptability of disparate integration, is the increased complexity in blending the various pieces so that final design has a coherent and cohesive connection. When working in this design genre, the services of a professional Interior Designer is much more important, than when working in a single style or period.

U.S. Department of Commerce anti-dumping duties on Chinese imports

Washington – Newly released duty rates on 30 Chinese furniture factories accused of dumping have been given rates of 41% for their 2009 U.S. exported wood furniture products. “The annual review is a compex process that looks at a variety of factors ranging from materials, electricity, and transportation costs to factors of production in the assembling of cardboard cartons”. (Furniture Today).

Furniture Manufacturing Moving to USA

A surprising, and welcomed, sourcing change by Lauren of Ralph Lauren, to move their upholstery manufacturing from China to the USA, has just been announced. Due to quality, and more importantly customization limitations of off-shore production, this business decision has been made. This move appears to be an, albeit small, but growing trend by higher end fashion producers to relocate American market production back to the USA. Apparently there are value and strategic strengths in on-shore manufacturing.
